Located in Wenzhou City, a famous historical and cultural city in China known to have “the best scenery in East and South China”, Wenzhou University is the only comprehensive university located in Southern Zhejiang, Northern Fujian and Eastern Jiangxi Province, a key higher education provider under the “joint effort of the city and the province”. Combined from Wenzhou Normal College and former Wenzhou University in 2004, the origin of the university can be sourced back to Wenzhou Normal School established in 1933. So far it has had a history of 87 years. Academician Chaohao Gu, winner of the State Supreme Science and Technology Award, used to be the President of the University. When General Secretary Jinping Xi was governing Zhejiang Province, he used to point out: “we need to focus on education and talent training, and we need to particularly devote to making Wenzhou University and other universities high-quality higher education providers” (quoted from "Be down-to-earth and be in the frontline”, CPC Party School Press).

Wenzhou University has established a multi-level and multi-form education structure including undergraduate study, postgraduate study, continuing study, international students study, and international collaborative education. Its programs cover a large range of subjects including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art and so on. It is comprised of 20 institutes, including Oujiang College (an independent institute).

Comprised of Chashan and Xueyuan Road campuses, the university covers a land area of 1578.18 mu (equivalent to 1,052,120 sq.m), including 775,200 sq.m for the school buildings, teaching and scientific research equipment with a total value of 739 million Yuan, collection of 2,035,000 books as well as 1,844,800 copies of electronic books, as well as 107 Chinese and overseas electronic periodicals and information databases. The university is employing 1,199 full-time teachers (708 are PhDs, accounting for 59.05% of all the staff; 677 with senior titles, accounting for 56.46% of all the staff), has established a national talent demonstration base, has introduced 32 national-level talents, including full-time academicians, dual-employment academicians, Yangtze scholars, national outstanding young talents, national young and medium-aged specialists with outstanding contributions, candidates of national “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project”, outstanding national young talents, famous cultural experts of CPC Publicity Department and “National Four Batches”higher level national talents (including 25 full-time employees), as well as 139 provincial level talents (269 candidates in total).

Having become a master’s degree awarding institute back in 2003, we currently offer 17 master’s degree awarding centers for first-level disciplines and 12 professional master’s degree awarding centers. In 2017 it was listed as a project unit to award doctor’s degree in Zhejiang Province; in the same year it was approved to be a post-doctoral station to train doctors and post-doctors together with 16 other famous higher education providers and scientific research institutes from China and overseas. It has established its own distinctive subjects and formed an education structure that excels in arts and sciences, specializes in engineering, economics, management, law, and business, which makes it the most expensive higher education provider in Southern Zhejiang, Northern Fujian and Eastern Jiangxi Province. Ecology sciences is a dominant subject of Zhejiang Province, chemistry, Chinese language and literature, electrical engineering, law, Marxist Theories, applied economics, mechanical engineering, ecology, and civil engineering are the top level subjects of Zhejiang Province, and chemistry, material science, and engineering have entered top 1% of ESI ranking around the globe. 

Adhering to the tradition of “enriching morality and exploring wisdom and truth”, carrying forward the motto of “pursuing knowledge and taking the initiatives”, the university takes root in Wenzhou but serves the whole Zhejiang, radiates the whole country, reach the whole world, and endeavors to build itself into a high-level training and research institute with its own distinctive characteristics.
